AGRO PRODUCTS

Adulteration of "AGRO PRODUCTS" is a legal term meaning that a food product fails to meet federal or state standards. Adulteration is an addition of another substance to a food item in order to increase the quantity of the food item in raw form or prepared form, which may result in the loss of actual quality of food item. These substances may be other available food items or non-food items. Among meat and meat products some of the items used to adulterate are water or ice, carcasses, or carcasses of animals other than the animal meant to be consumed.

Following are few examples of Adulterants in Food


1 Adulterant: Argemone seeds / Argemone oil
Foods Commonly Involved: Mustard seeds / Edible oils and fats

Diseases or Health Effects: Epidemic dropsy, Glaucoma, Cardiac arrest

 

2 Adulterant: Artificially coloured foreign seeds
Foods Commonly Involved: As a substitute for cumin seed, Poppy seed, black pepper

Diseases or Health Effects: Injurious to health

 

3 Adulterant: Foreign leaves or exhausted tea leaves, saw dust artificially coloured
Foods Commonly Involved: Tea

Diseases or Health Effects: Injurious to health, Cancer

 

4 Adulterant: TCP
Foods Commonly Involved: Oils

Diseases or Health Effects: Paralysis

 

5 Adulterant: Rancid oil
Foods Commonly Involved: Oils

Diseases or Health Effects: Destroys vitamin A and E

 

6 Adulterant: Sand, marble chips, stones, filth
Foods Commonly Involved: Food grains, pulses etc.

Diseases or Health Effects: Damage digestive tract

 

7 Adulterant: Lathyrus sativus
Foods Commonly Involved: Khesari dal alone or Mixed in other pulses

Diseases or Health Effects: Lathyrism (crippling spastic paraplegia)

 

8 Adulterant: Toxins from Fusarium sporotrichioides
Foods Commonly Involved: Grains (millet, wheat, oats, rye,etc)

Diseases or Health Effects: Alimentary toxic aleukia(ATA) (epidemic panmyelotoxicosis)

 

9 Adulterant: Toxins from Fusarium sporotrichiella
Foods Commonly Involved: Moist grains
Diseases or Health Effects: Urov disease (Kaschin-Beck disease)

 

10 Adulterant: Toxins from Penicillium inslandicum, Penicillium atricum, Penicillium citreovirede, Fusarium, Rhizopus, Aspergillus
Foods Commonly Involved: Yellow rice
Diseases or Health Effects: Toxic mouldy rice disease

 

11 Adulterant: Sterigmatocystin from Aspergillus versicolour, Aspergillus nidulans and bipolaris
Foods Commonly Involved: Foodgrains
Diseases or Health Effects: Hepatitis

 

12 Adulterant: Ascaris lumbricoides
Foods Commonly Involved: Any raw food or water contaminated by human faces containing eggs of the parasite
Diseases or Health Effects: Ascariasis

 

13 Adulterant: Entamoeba histolytica Viral
Foods Commonly Involved: Raw vegetables and fruits
Diseases or Health Effects: Amoebic dysentery

 

14 Adulterant: Polycyclic Aromatic, Hydrocarbons(PAH)
Foods Commonly Involved: Smoked fish, meat, mineral oil-contaminated water, oils, fats and fish, especially shell-fish
Diseases or Health Effects: Cancer

 

15 Adulterant: Nitrates and Nitrites
Foods Commonly Involved: Drinking water, spinach rhubarb, asparagus, etc. and meat products
Diseases or Health Effects: Methaemoglobinaemia especially in infants, cancer and tumours in the liver, kidney, trachea oesophagus and lungs. The liver is the initial site but afterwards tumours appear in other organs.

Donations from Food Companies and Retailers

Donations of surplus food greatly benefit the BGS Foundation mission of feeding our hungry neighbors. Keeping surplus quality food out of waste streams and landfills benefits the donor, who may realize tax benefits for their generosity, as well as saving on disposal costs, while providing our hungry neighbors with the nutritional benefits of fresh produce, meat, dairy and deli items, shelf-stable and frozen foods.

We also welcome donations of bulk foods, such as cereal, beans, pasta, rice and all other Agro products, which we repackage into family-sized bags in our state-of-the art bulk processing room. Agricultural Donations

Feeding people. It’s what farmers do, and it’s what we do at BGS Foundation, too.
Members of the agricultural community can help our hungry neighbors in many ways, including by donating farm-fresh produce or a portion of their crop proceeds to the BGS Foundation.

Monetary donations are always welcome and are needed to purchase food and to help with the operational expenses of delivering food to partner feeding programs of BGS Foundation.
